BU Wrestlers Heading to NCAA Championships


BLOOMSBURG-- Bloomsburg University wrestler Ricky Schmelyun (Nex Oxford/Bermudian Springs) has been selected as an at-large qualifier for the 2009 NCAA Division I wrestling championships to be held next week in St. Louis, MO.

Schmelyun, a 165-pounder, will join Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring Ford) (157 pounds), George Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/Riverside) (149) and Ian Moser (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) (125) as wrestlers representing Bloomsburg University.

Moley, a junior, will be making his third trip to the NCAA championships. He earned All-American honors last year with an eighth place finish. So far this season he has posted a record of 31-5 on the season and is coming off a weekend in which he won the Eastern Wrestling League's Outstanding Wrestler award after winning the 157-pound championship with an upset of top-ranked Gregor Gillespie of Edinboro.

Hickman, a senior, finished second at 149 pounds and has earned his first-ever trip to the NCAA championships. He has posted a record of 23-12 this season.

Moser, a sophomore, finished third at the EWL championships to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA championships. He is making his first-ever trip to nationals and posted a record of 22-12 during the season.

chmelyun, a junior, has a record of 31-13 this season and is tied for the Division I lead for pins in his weight class with 15. He is making his first-ever trip to the NCAA championships.

The NCAA Division I wrestling championships will be held March 19-21 at the Scott Trade Center in St. Louis, The top eight in each weight class will earn All-American honors.
