Guffey Takes First at Binghamton Open
BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team participated in the Binghamton Open on Nov. 16th in Binghamton, N.Y.
The top finishers on the day for the Huskies were Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run), who went 5-0 at 133-pounds and Rickey Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs), who went 3-1 at 165-pounds. Guffey earned a first place finish, while Schmelyun finished third.
Guffey was dominant on the day picking up two technical falls and a 2-0 and 7-3 decision. In the finals Guffey defeated Cory Dunn of Sacred Heart 10-6 to take first place. In Schmelyun's first two matches he earned a 5-0 decision and a pin 1:23 into the first period. Schmelyun would go on to lose in the quarterfinals, but picked up a pin 56 seconds into the third place match against Jake Wilson of Shippensburg.
The other top finisher for the Huskies was Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls), who went 2-2 at 285-pounds. After a first round loss to future champion Zach Hammond of Cornell, Walsh rebounded with a 6-4 decision and medical forfeit before being eliminated by Brandon Williamson of Nassau.
