Bloomsburg Wrestlers Stay Alive at NCAA Championships

OMAHA, NE-The Bloomsburg University wrestling team advanced two wrestlers to Friday's action at the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling championships in Omaha, NE. Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) and Rick Schmelyn (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) both moved on to Friday's action, while Nate Graham (Selkirk,NY/Ravena) was eliminated.

Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford), the ninth seed at 157 pounds, opened the tournament facing Colton Salazar of Purdue in the first round and posted a win by fall. The first period saw no scoring and Moley led just 1-0 after two periods. Moley took bottom to start the period and worked an escape.

In the third period Salazar chose bottom and Moley was able to turn the junior and earn three near fall points and go up 4-0. After Salazar escaped and got a takedown to make it a 4-3 match, Moley escaped and picked up a takedown to lead 7-3. Moley then turned Salazar to earn three more near fall points before getting the pin with 29 seconds left in the match.

In the round of 16 match, Moley faced off with unranked Justin Gaethje of Northern Colorado and lost in the tie breaker, 3-2. With the score 0-0 going to the second period, Moley chose bottom and was able to work an escape to lead 1-0 going to the final period. In the third Gaethje chose bottom and worked out of a near tilt by Moley just before riding time would have gone into effect to knot the match at 1-1 forcing sudden death. In the OT period there was no scoring. In the tie breaker period one, Gaethje worked a reversal on the edge of the mat to lead 3-1. In the tie breaker period two, Moley chose bottom and got an escape, but could not get a takedown and lost 3-2.

Moley will now drop to the consolation bracket and will face Joseph Booth of Drexel on Friday morning.

Rick Schmelyn (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs), seeded 11th at 165 pounds, faced Paul Gillespie of Hofstra in the opening round. After no scoring in the first two periods, Schmelyun chose top to start the period and rode Gillespie. Schmelyun earned the first points of the match with a three-point near fall, then picked up a point for riding time to win 4-0.

In the round of 16 Schmelyun faced sixth seeded Dan Vallimont of Penn State and lost 9-0. Vallimont took control of the match early scoring a takedown just eight seconds in the match. He went on to score a takedown in the second and third periods as well and with riding time won 9-0.

In the consolation bracket Schmelyun will face Cody Yohn of Minnesota on Friday.

At 174 pounds Nate Graham (Selkirk,NY/Ravena) faced Jason Ison of Ohio University in his first match in the NCAA championships and lost 5-2. Ison got two first period takedowns and a third period escape to post the win.

In the first round of consolations Graham faced Nate Lee of Boise State and lost 6-1 to see his season come to a close with a record of 27-11.
