Huskies Drop Close Match to Penn State


STATE COLLEGE- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team lost to in-state rival Penn State by a score of 23-15.

The Huskies won two of the first three bouts to take a 9-4 lead. One of the wins came by fall from freshman Danny Gaylord (Vestal, NY/Vestal) at 133 pounds. Penn State rallied and won three straight to go up 14-9. One of the wins was the feature bout of the afternoon was at 157 pounds where Bloomsburg's second-ranked Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) lost to fifth-ranked Cyler Sanderson by a 3-1 score.

After Penn State rallied and went on top 14-9, Bloomsburg won matches at both 174 and 184 to go back on top 15-14. At 197 Penn State regained the lead with a come-from-behind win, then closed out the win with a win by fall at 285 pounds.

Bloomsburg, 2-1, wrestles at the Navy Classic next week.



Match By Match Summary

125: Penn State's eighth-ranked Brad Pataky took a 4-1 lead after one period with two takedowns. In the second period Patke extended his lead with five takedowns to grab a 15-5 lead going to the third period. In the final period Patke closed out the win by getting two more takedowns and posted a 22-7 four-point technical fall win.

133: Bloomsburg's Dan Gaylord jumped out to a quick lead scoring a takedown and a two-point near fall for a 4-0 lead. Bryan Pearsall escaped then later scored a takedown and a three-point near fall to go on top 6-4 after one period. In the second Pearsall scored a reversal and a two-point near fall in the first minute to grab a 10-4 advantage. In the third period Pearsall appeared to be in control before Gaylord scored a takedown, then quickly put Pearsall on his back and scored a pin in 5:28.

141: PSU's Colby Pisani controlled the first period getting a takedown and two, two-point near falls for a 6-0 lead. Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.L. Laney) escaped then scored a takedown with one second left to make it 6-3 after one period. In the second Hickman scored two takedowns and two, three-point near falls for a 14-7 lead after two periods. In the third period, Hickman picked up two more takedowns and went on to post a 19-12 win to give the Huskies a 9-4 advantage.

149: PSU's Frank Molinaro controlled the bout and led 6-2 after one period and went on to post a 12-3 win over Bloomsburg's Josh Roosa (Mountaintop/Crestwood).

157: There was no scoring in the first period between second-ranked Matt Moley from Bloomsburg and fifth-ranked Cyler Sanderson. In the second period the only scoring came when Moley let Sanderson up to start the period. In the third, Moley picked an escape to tie the match at 1-1. Sanderson picked up the only takedown of the match with just about a minute to go in the match to take a 3-1 lead. Moley nearly tied the bout in the closing seconds, but he was out of bounds.

165: In the first period there was no scoring between Bloomsburg's Rick Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) and Penn State's Dan Vallimont. In the second period, Vallimont scored a reversal with a minute to go in the period to take a 2-0 lead. In the third period Schmelyun chose top to start the period, but could not get any near fall points and with riding time Vallimont earned a 2-1 victory.

174: Bloomsburg's Nate Graham (Selkirk, NY/Ravena) led 4-1 after one period against PSU's Nick Fisher with two takedowns in the opening three minutes. Graham made it 6-2 after two period with another third takedown, then closed out the win two more takedowns and a point for riding time to post an 11-5 win.

184: In the opening period between Bloomsburg's Derek Coffey (Lewisburg/Lewisburg) and PSU's Justin Ortgega there was no score. Coffey escaped to open the second period to go up 1-0 going to the final period. In the third Coffey picked up two near fall points early in the period and then earned a point for riding in a 4-0 win to put the Huskies back on top 15-14.

197: There was no scoring in the first period between Bloomsburg's Jake Dabashinsky (Schuylkill Haven/Blue Mountain) and Penn State's Clay Stedman. In the second period Dabashinsky escaped for the only scoring of the frame. Stedman escaped with 45 seconds to go in the third to tie the match, then picked up a takedown with 30 to go and posted a 3-1 victory over Dabashinky.

285: In the first period, PSU's Cameron Wade scored a takedown to BU's Zac Walsh's (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) escape to lead 2-1 after one period. In the second Wade scored a two-point near fall, then put the match away with a pin in 4:42.
