2000-01 Bloomsburg University Women's Swimming Preview

Over the last two seasons, injuries to top swimmers have prevented the Bloomsburg University women's swimming team from reaching its full potential.

Naturally, the key to a successful 2000-2001 season for head coach Dave Rider's squad is to get to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships with a full complement of athletes. "I expect to score more points at the conference meet," said Rider.

That full complement of athletes will include a pair of juniors who were All-Americans in 1999 as part of relay teams, a sophomore that posted the team's best individual finish at the 2000 PSAC Championships, and a group of newcomers that makes up half of the squad's ranks.

Janine DiSalvatore, Brittany Sneberger, and Ashley Jones are the core of the Huskies lineup.

DiSalvatore was hampered by a late-season ankle injury that prevented her from placing at the PSAC meet. She is the Huskies' featured butterflier and also a key part of the 400 medley relay team.

Sneberger plays a large role on Bloomsburg's relay teams. She helped four relay teams to top-four finishes at the PSAC meet.

Sneberger, along with Jones, make up one of the best freestyle units in the conference. Jones placed in the top-five in the 100, 200, and 500-yard freestyle events at the 2000 PSAC meet. Her second-place finish in the 200 free was the best finish by a Bloomsburg swimmer. "We have a lot of good freestylers," said Rider. "That's going to be the strength of our team."

Senior co-captains Lisa Crary and Danielle Kadingo look to turn in their best seasons. Crary swims distance events for the Huskies. Kadingo finished 12th in the 200 butterfly at the PSAC meet, the first time she had scored points at the conference meet.

Ten of Rider's 20 swimmers are new to the program. Rider thinks the class of newcomers is talented enough to contribute right away. "I think we can win meets with our depth," said Rider.

Kelly Gribbin and Katie Jeffers are freshmen expected to help out in some stroke events. Gribbin will help offer depth in breaststroke and individual medley events. Jeffers will help in the backstroke events.

Angila Bair, Katy Greible, Holly Hicks, Jodi Kaiser, Maureen Klein, Erika Troutman, Lindsay Wallace, and Becky Witwer round out Rider's crop of newcomers.

The Huskies will swim four home meets this season, including the Bloomsburg Relays on November 5. The PSAC Championships will be held February 22-24 at West Chester.
