Swim Teams Defeat Ithaca College in Dual Meet

BLOOMSBURGThe Bloomsburg University men's and women's swim competed against Ithaca College, Saturday. The women defeated Ithaca 118-87, while the men fell 134-71 to the visiting Bombers.
For the women, the Huskies started off the day with a win in the 400-medley relay. The team of Kari Pokrzwya (Fairless Hills/Pennsbury), Erin Carey (West Chester/Henderson), Jenn Shank (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) and Becky Witwer (Harrisburg/ Susquehanna Valley) finished with a time of 4:10.04, beating all opponents by a margin of seven seconds.
Freshmen Ashley Yelinek (Youngwood/Southmoreland) finished with two first-place finishes, one in the 1,000-yard freestyle, with a time of 10:51.86 and in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.03. Carey also had two individual first-place finishes with a time of 2:13.73 in the 200-yard IM and a 2:31.31 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Lauren Sterkenberg (Lancaster/Hempfield) also added a first-place for the Huskies in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:16.98.
Shank also added a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.13, while Lindsay Wallace (Frenchville/Clearfield) finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.89. In the 100-yard freestyle, Wallace also finished second with a time of 55.77.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Pokrzwya and Ashley Koch (West Chester/West Chester East) placed second and third, respectively, with times of 2:13.60 and 2:16.70.
On the men's side, the Huskies fell to the Bombers 134-71. The team was led by Jason Davis (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin), who captured the Huskies' sole first-place finish in individual events. Davis won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.65.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Stephen Post (Scranton/Scranton), Brandon Hilt (Mt. Joy/Hempfield), Andrew Wise (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and Chris Rumfelt (Shamokin/Shamokin Area) also captured first place with at time of 3:21.74.
Rumfelt also turned in a second and third place finish on the day. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, he was second with a time of 10:21.98 and in the 500-yard freestyle he finished third in 5:05.09.
Sophomore Travis Backenstoe (Walnutport/Northampton) placed second in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle with times of 22.28 and 49.78, respectively.
The women, who have a dual meet record of 2-0, will travel to the College of New Jersey for their next race on Nov. 22, beginning at 2:00 p.m. The men, 1-1 in dual meets, will compete in the Kutztown Invitational on Nov. 21 and 22, with competition beginning at 6:00 p.m. both days.
