Bloomsburg Swim Teams Continue at PSAC Championships

BLOOMSBURG—After two days of the 2004 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships, the Bloomsburg University women's team is in ninth place with 79 points, while the men's team is 5th with 50 points.

In the day two finals, the women's 200 free relay team of Courtney Dean (Lancaster/Hempfield), Becky Witwer (Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township), Erin Carey (West Chester/Henderson) and Lindsay Wallace was eighth in 1:41.97, while the men's team of Brandon Hilt (Mt.Joy/Hempfield), Matt Fender, Andrew Wise and Travis Backenstoe (Walnutport/Northampton) was fifth in the same event in 1:28.40.

In the women's 500 free, Ashley Yelinek (Youngwood/Southmoreland) was eighth in 5:15.40. In the 50 free for the women, Courtney Dean was 12th in 25.56 with Backenstoe was fifth for the men in the same event in 21.62.

In the men's 400-medley relay, the team of Brandon Hilt (Mt.Joy/Hempfield), Jason Davis (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin), Tom DiSalvatore (Thornton/West Chester East) and Travis Beckenstoe were fifth in 3:39.45.

In the Thursday's preliminary action for the women, the top finisher for Bloomsburg was Ashley Yelinek in the women's 500 yard freestyle with an eighth place finish in a time of 5:18.01, which qualified her for the “B” finals. Also qualifying for the “B” finals in the women's 50 yard freestyle was Courtney Dean with an 11th place finish in a time of 25.19 and Erin Carey in the women's 200 yard IM with a time of 2:14.06 for a 11th place finish.

On the men's side, in the men's 50 yard freestyle, Travis Backenstoe qualified for the “A” finals with a time of 21:49, giving him a 5th place finish.

In the relay events, Bloomsburg qualified for the “B” finals in the women's 200 yard freestyle relay with a 7th place finish at a time of 1:41.48. Swimming in that relay was Courtney Dean, Erin Carey, Becky Witwer and Lindsay Wallace. Also qualifying in the women's 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:08.86 and placing 8th was Kari Pokrzwya (Fairless Hills/Pennsbury), Erin Carey, Becky Witwer, and Lindsay Wallace.

In the men's relay event, Brandon Hilt, Jason Davis, Tom DiSalvatore and Travis Beckenstoe qualified for the finals for the men's 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:38.15 placing 4th. And qualifying for the finals in the men's 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.57 and placing 5th was Andrew Wise, Stephen Post, Brandon Hilt and Travis Beckenstoe.
