PSAC Swimming Championships Come to a Close

BLOOMSBURG— The PSAC Swimming Championships came to a close on Saturday with the Bloomsburg University women's team finishing fifth with 288 points, while the men took sixth with 141 points.

For the women, Ashley Yelinek (Youngwood/Southmoreland) turned in a strong performance in the 1650 freestyle, taking fifth place in 17:59. Kari Pokrzwya (Fairless Hills/Pennsbury) also swam well for the Huskies, placing ninth in the 200 backstroke in 2:11.70, while Becky Witwer (Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) took 11th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:33.13.

Lauren Sterkenberg (Lancaster/Hempfield) took 12th in the 200 butterfly in her first ever PSAC Championships in a time of 2:19.01.

The Huskies 400 freestyle relay team of Lindsay Wallace (Frenchville/Clearfield), Courtney Dean (Lancaster/Hempfield), Witwer, and Yelinek also finished sixth in a time of 3:42.78.

The men were led by Travis Backenstoe (Walnutport/Northampton) who took sixth in the 100 freestyle in 48.35. Brandon Hilt (Mt. Joy/Hempfield) also turned in a strong performance for Bloomsburg, placing seventh in the 200 backstroke in 2:00.11.

David Rude (Pottstown/West-mont Christian) and Ryan Farrell (Mountaintop/Bishop Hoban) placed for the Huskies in the 1650 freestyle. Rude took 11th in 17:35.57 while Farrell finished 13th in 18:26.20. Jason Davis (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) also had a solid showing at the PSAC Championships, taking 12th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.93.

The Huskies 400 freestyle team finished fourth in the final event of the day. The team, composed of Andrew Wise (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin), Tom DiSalvatore (Thornton/West Chester East), Backenstoe, and Hilt, finished in 3:14.46.
