Bloomsburg Beats East Stroudsburg In Women's Swimming

BLOOMSBURG— The Bloomsburg University women's swim team defeated PSAC-rival, East Stroudsburg, 137-125 on Saturday, improving their dual meet record to 5-0.

Getting the Huskies off to a strong start in the individual events was PSAC Swimmer of the Week, Ashley Yelinek (Youngwood/Southmoreland). Yelinek finished first in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:19.41.

In the second race of the day, senior Lindsay Wallace (Frenchville/Clearfield) got a win in the 200-yard freestyle for the Huskies with a time of 2:03.93. Becky Kadingo (Orwigsburg/Nativity B.V.M.) was second in the event, finishing the race with a time of 2:04.54. Wallace also recorded a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.42.

Kari Pokrzwya (Fairless Hills/Pennsbury) and Sara Lengler (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) finished second and third for the Huskies in the 100-yard backstroke, with times of 59.77 and 1:02.87, respectively, while Ashley Koch (West Chester/West Chester East) was fourth in 1:05.47.

In the 100-breaststroke, sophomore Erin Carey (West Chester/Henderson) finished first for the Huskies with a time of 1:13.05. Following Carey's win, Lauren Sterkenberg (Lancaster/Hempfield) recorded a first-place finish for the Huskies in the 100 butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:19.17. Sterkenberg also was second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.06

In the 200-backstroke, Pokrzwya was second with a time of 2:15.34, while Laura Jeffers (Collegeville/

Perkiomen Valley) finished third in 2:19.52.

Bloomsburg's Becky Witwer (Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) won the 200-breastroke with a time of 2:34.92, while Carey took third with a time of 2:37.70.

In the 500-yard freestyle, the Huskies swept the Lady Raiders. Yelinek led Bloomsburg, taking first in 5:26.62, with Jodi Kaiser (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) and Kelly Gribbin (Richboro/Council Rock) taking second and third with time sof 5:32.57 and 5:41.22, respectively.

In the final individual event, the 200-yard IM, Carey took second-place with a time of 2:20.12, while Witwer and Lengler were third and fourth, respectively, with times of 2:21.51 and 2:22.05.

The meet wrapped up with the 400-yard freestyle relay. Courtney Dean (Lancaster/Hempfield), Koch, Kidingo and Yelinek finished second with a time of 3:49.64, while Kaiser, Jeffers, Pokrzwya and Holly McCullough (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) were third with a time of 3:57.52.

The Huskies next meet will be Saturday, Jan. 24, when both the men's and women's teams will host Indiana (PA) at 1:00 p.m.
