Huskies Fall to West Chester in Swimming

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University women's swim team suffered their first loss of the season losing to West Chester on Saturday, 140-117. The Huskies are now 6-1 on the year.

Leading the Huskies was Erin Carey (West Chester/Henderson), taking first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:32.66 and also winning the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:16.31.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Carey was second in 1:11.33. Placing third behind Carey in the 100-yard breaststroke was Becky Witwer (Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township), who finished in 1:11.41. Witwer also took second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:20.40.

Ashley Yelinek (Youngwood/Southermoreland) also turned in a strong performance, finishing the day with a first and second-place finish. Yelinek was first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:22.21, and was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:59.70.

In the 50-freestyle, Courtney Dean (Lancaster/Hempfield) placed second with a time of 26.11, while Lindsay Wallace (Frenchville/Clearfield) was third in 26:15. Wallace and Dean also placed second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle, in times of 56.60 and 57.74. In the 200-yard freestyle, Wallace posted another second place finish with a time of 2:02.50.

Kari Pokrzwya (Fairless Hills/Pennsbury) got two second place finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. In the 100, Pokrzwya finished with a time of 1:02.08, while in the 200, she finished in 2:11.98. Ashley Koch (West Chester/West Chester East) also posted strong finishes in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, taking fourth in the 100 in 1:04.17 and placing third behind Pokrzwya in the 200, with a time of 2:16.89.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Lauren Sterkenberg (Lanceaster/Hempfield) recorded a third place finish with a time of 1:04.60.

The Huskies took first and second in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Becky Kadingo (Orwigsburg/Vativity B.V.M.) Dean, Yelinek, and Wallace won the race with a time of 3:51.07, while Jodi Kaiser (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional), Emily Varley (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury), Pokrzwya and Koch took second in 3:57.71.

The Huskies will swim their make-up match against Indiana (PA) on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Nelson Field House. The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m.
