Bloomsburg Women Take First at Franklin and Marshall Invitational; Men Finish Fourth
LANCASTER —The Bloomsburg University women's swim team won the Franklin and Invitational over the weekend, while the men finished fourth.
The Bloomsburg women won in convincing style finishing with 1,445.5 points with F and M taking second with 1,090.5 points. The Bloomsburg men were fourth with 733 points with Rowan winning the men's competition with 1,412 points.
Ashley Yelinek (Youngwood/Southmoreland), Kari Pokrzwya (Fairless Hills/Pennsbury) and Dianna Smith (West Grove/Avon Grove) were all two-time winners for the Huskies. Yelinek was first in the 1650 free in a time of 17:53.36 and the 500 free in 5:15.24. Pokrzwya was first in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.19 and the 200 back in 2:11.19. Smith took first in the 50 free in 24.83 and the 200 free in 1:56.70.
In addition, Ashley Kroh (Boyertown/Boyertown) was second in the 1650 free in 18:17.10 and third in 500 free in 5:21.66. Ashley Koch (Collegeville/West Chester East) was third in two events; the 100 back in 1:01.46 and the 200 back in 2:21.92. Courtney Dean (Lancaster/Hempfield) was second in the 100 free in 55.13, while Erin Carey (West Chester/Henderson) took second in the 400 IM in 4:45.22.
In relay action, the Huskies took first in the 200 free relay in a time of 1:40.83 with Dean, Kelly Gribbin (Richboro/Council Rock North), Carey and Smith swimming. The Huskies were also first in the 400 free relay in 3:41.70 with Laura Jeffers, Kroh, Becky Kandingo (Orwigsburg/Nativity BVM) and Yelinek swimming. In the 800 free relay, the Huskies were first in 8:02.52 with Dean, Gribbin, Yelinek and Smith in the water.
For the men, Chris Rumfelt (Shamokin/Shamokin) was first in the 500 free in 4:43.48 and second in the 200 free in 1:43.05; the 100 free in 47.16 and the 1000 free in 9:57.31. In the 50 free Travis Backenstoe (Walnutport/Northampton) was first in 21.36 and third in the 100 free in 47.19. In the 100 breast, Nicholas Prima (Glencoe, Trinidad) was third in 1:01.00.
In relay action, the Huskies took first in the 400 free relay in 3:11.84 with the team of Rumfelt, Steven Post (Scranton/Scranton), Prima and Backenstoe swimming. In the 800 free relay, the Huskies' team of Rumfelt, Backenstoe, Eric Weathers (Eagleville/Methacton) and Post finishing first in 7:09.63. Also, the Huskies were second in the 200 free relay in 1:27.47 with Backenstoe, Rumfelt, Wagner and Prima swimming.
