BLOOMSBURG—Members of the Bloomsburg University women's tennis team are competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Eastern Regional Championships this weekend. The singles and doubles champions from the tournament will advance to the 2001 ITA National Small College Tennis Championships, hosted by Collin County Community College in McKinney, Texas.
Erin Bartsch, the number two seed in the tournament, defeated Kristin Filz of Dowling College, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round after receiving a bye in the first round. She will play Abbie Sweitzer of Millersville University in the quarterfinals.
Beth Fulton won her first round match over Kate Opilo of Millersville, 6-4, 7-5, before falling to Shippensburg's Laura Atwater, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Miranda Campbell also won her first round match. She defeated Franklin Pierce's Ellen Plastridge, 6-2, 7-5. She fell in the second round the third-seeded Ella Reilly of Slippery Rock, 6-4, 6-4. Kate Kochera received a first round bye, but was not successful in her second round match falling to Millersville's Heather Miller, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5).
In doubles action, first seeded Bartsch/Kochera was upset by Sweitzer/Opilo of Millersville in the second round. Campbell/Bramante defeated Franklin Pierce's team of Plastridge/Morrison, 8-1, before falling to Miller/Cornelius of Millersville.
In the “B” Draw, three Bloomsburg players will still be in action tomorrow. Molly Clay defeated Lisa Seiler of Edinboro, 7-6, 6-1. She will face Millersville's Kristi Lynn Miller tomorrow. Larissa Bench got an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Sara Dvorsky of Slippery Rock. She will face Tashi Sharma of Adelphi tomorrow. Julieanne Bramante coasted by Shippensburg's Caroline Secher, 6-0, 6-0. She will face Hanelle Tekaaho of Adelphi tomorrow.
