Bloomsburg Downs Millersville in Women's Tennis

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team defeated Millersville University, 7-2, on Tuesday. The win improves the Huskies to 5-4 on the season, 3-0 in PSAC play.

In doubles action, the third doubles team of sophomores Lauren Colfer (Philadelphia/St. Basil Academy) and Brande Hansteen (Wyncote/Cheltenham) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead en route to an 8-3 victory over Millersville. At first doubles, the freshmen duo of Iida Hokkanen (Helsinki, Finland) and Emily Murphy (Montgomery/Methacton) put another Bloomsburg victory on the scoreboard defeating the Marauders, 8-4. The Huskies lost a tough match at second doubles, 8-6. Julianne Bramante (Endwell, NY/Union-Endicott) and Lindsey Wyckoff (North Canton, OH/Hoover) were trailing 4-0, rallied to get back to within 5-4, before falling to Millersville.

In singles action, the Huskies won the match winning five of the six positions. Wyckoff was first off the court, winning, 6-2, 6-4 over Millersville's Kristi-Lynn Miller at third singles. At the four slot, after cruising to a 6-0 win in the first set, Murphy defeated the Marauders' Allison Brewer in a tiebreaker for the second set, 7-6 (8-6).

Clinching the fifth point for the Huskies was Hokkanen's win at first singles over Steph Eckhart, 6-4, 6-3. At fifth and sixth singles, the Huskies got two more points from Hansteen and Colfer. At five, Hansteen split sets winning the first, 7-6 (7-5) before falling, 6-4 in the second. Because the match was already decided, Hansteen and her opponent played a super tiebreaker for the third set, with Hansteen prevailing, 10-6 for the Huskies.

Because the team match had not been decided when Colfer and Millersville's Lilli split sets, they were forced to play out the third. After splitting with identical 6-3 scores, Colfer prevailed, again, 6-3 in the third.

With the win, the Huskies move to 4-0 in Division II after starting out the spring season with a record of 1-4 in their first five matches. This weekend, the Huskies will host the Bloomsburg Duals which will include teams from Concordia, California (PA), Queens College, Green Mountain and Franklin Pierce College.
