Bloomsburg Wins PSAC Women's Tennis Title

SHIPPENSBURG —The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team captured its seventh Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title in school history with a 5-3 win over Millersville University on Saturday.

The title is the first for the Huskies since 1999 and the first title it has not shared with another school since 1996.

Bloomsburg opened a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins at number two and number three. At number two doubles, Julianne Bramante (Endwell, NY/Union-Endicott) and Lindsey Wyckoff (North Canton, OH/Hoover) picked up an 8-5 win, while at number three Lauren Colfer (Philadelphia/St. Basil Academy) and Brande Hansteen (Wyncote/Cheltenham) earned an 8-6 win. At number one, the Huskies' Iida Hokkanen (Helsinki, Finland) and Emily Murphy (Montgomery/Methacton) lost a tough 9-7 match.

In singles, Hokkanen won at number one, 6-2, 6-0, while Wyckoff picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win at number three. At number five, Murphy played a deciding match winning 7-6 (5), 6-1 to give Bloomsburg the win.

Bloomsburg advanced to the finals with a 5-4 win in the semifinals earlier in the day over Indiana (PA). The Huskies again led 2-1 after doubles player with wins coming again at number two and three. In singles play, the Huskies swept the lower half of the draw winning at numbers four, five and six. Murphy won at four, 6-4, 6-2, while Hansteen won at five, 6-1, 6-1 with Colfer a winner at six, 6-0, 6-1.

Bloomsburg, 14-5, will take part in the PSAC singles and doubles championships next weekend at Bloomsburg.
