Women's Tennis Sweeps Doubles to Get First Win of Spring Season

HILTON HEAD, SC—The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team got its first win of the spring season in a 5-4 victory over Northern Kentucky.

The match began with singles, where the Huskies picked up two wins. At first singles, Iida Hokkanen (Helsinki, Finland) dominated her opponent winning, 6-0, 6-1, while at the six singles, after splitting sets, Lauren Colfer (Philadelphia/St. Basil Academy) came out on top, 6-2, 2-6, 10-6.

At second singles, Julianne Bramante (Endwell, NY/Union-Endicott) turned in a strong performance falling in a close 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) match. In the first set, Bramante was up 5-2, before Becky Dister was able to come back and take the set. The tables turned in the second match when Dister took a 5-2 lead. Bramante fought back leveling the set at 6-6 before falling in a tiebreaker, 7-5. At third singles, Lindsey Wyckoff (North Canton, OH/Hoover) split sets with her opponent, winning the first set in a tiebreaker, 8-6. After losing the second set, 6-3, Wyckoff found herself down, 7-3 in the third-set replacing tiebreaker. Evening the tiebreaker to 8-8, Wyckoff was unable to come out on top, falling 10-8 in the 10-point tiebreaker. At fourth and fifth singles, Emly and Brande fell in straight sets. At four, Emily Murphy (Montgomery/Methacton) was outlasted 6-4, 6-3, while Brande Hansteen (Wyncote/Cheltenham) fell 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Trailing in the match, 4-2 after singles play, the Huskies would need to sweep the doubles matches to get the win.

First off the court was Hansteen and Colfer at third doubles, winning in a close, 8-6 match. At second singles, Bramante and Wyckoff took a 5-2 lead early, before Northern Kentucky leveled the match at 5-5 and took a 6-5 lead. Bouncing back, Bramante and Wyckoff won three straight games, getting an 8-6 win.

The match was up to the first doubles team of Murphy and Hokkanen. Trailing 4-3 early, the duo was able to take a 5-4 lead en route to an 8-5 win, and the first victory for Bloomsburg of the spring.

The Huskies, now 1-3, play Belmont University (TN) on Tuesday, Mar. 9, at 8:00 a.m.
