Women's Tennis Team Snaps Year-Long Losing Streak Against Slippery Rock

HILTON HEAD, SC.—The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team defeated Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-rival, Slippery Rock, 5-4 in Hilton Head on Wednesday. It was the first win for the Huskies over Slippery Rock since the 2001-02 season.

In doubles play, Lauren Colfer (Philadelphia/St. Basil Academy) and Brande Hansteen (Wyncote/ Cheltenham) took control from the beginning, dominating the Slippery Rock duo of Justine Miller and Erika McKenna, 8-1. Next off the court was the number one duo of Iida Hokkanen (Helsinki, Finland) and Emily Murphy (Montgomery/Methacton), falling to the Rock's Intercolligate Tennis Association (ITA) national-qualifying team of Jesse Bungo and Ashley Michaux, 8-3. Despite a 5-2 lead at second doubles, Julianne Bramante (Endwell, NY/Union-Endicott) and Lindsey Wyckoff (North Canton, OH/Hoover) lost to Kelly Anderson and Ashley Greene, 8-6.

Down 2-1 going into singles, the Huskies regained a 4-2 lead getting three quick singles' victory. Hansteen was off the court quickly, dominating Miller, 6-1, 6-1. At fourth singles, Murphy got another Bloomsburg win with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Anderson. Colfer, at six singles, turned in a strong performance, defeating McKenna, 6-1, 6-1.

Slippery Rock closed the gap when Michaux got a 6-3, 6-1 win over Bramante and second singles. With only two matches left on-court, the Huskies needed one more win to take the match. At third singles, Wyckoff got a 7-6 (4), 6-0 win over Greene. Rounding out the match, Hokkanen, after winning the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), fell to Bungo, who also qualified for the ITA nationals in singles, 6-0, 10-3 in the final two sets.

With the win, the Huskies move to 2-4 on the year, 2-0 in division II play. Bloomsburg will have Thursday off and will come back and play Cawtaba on Friday at noon in their final spring break match.
