Huskies Fall to UNC-Asheville in Spring Break Opener

HILTON HEAD, SC—The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team fell, 7-0 to University of North Carolina-Asheville (UNCA) in its first spring break match in Hilton Head, SC.

In doubles, the Huskies were swept, 3-0 by the Bulldogs. At the first doubles position, Iida Hokkanen (Helsinki, Finland) and Emily Murphy (Montgomery/Methacton) lost 8-4, while at second doubles the team of Julianne Bramante (Endwell, NY/Union-Endicott) and Lindsey Wyckoff (North Canton, OH/Hoover) feel by the same score. The third doubles team of Lauren Colfer (Philadelphia/St. Basil Academy) and Jaclyn Kelly (Havertown/Haverford) were defeated 8-0, by UNCA.

Despite winning first sets in their singles matches, Hokkanen and Wyckoff fell in third set tiebreakers. Hokannen took the first set against Natasha Lucki at the number one position, 6-1, but fell in the second, 6-4. In the 10-point tiebreaker, replacing the third set, Lucki won 10-6. At third singles, Wyckoff took the first set, 6-4 and lost the second, 6-3. Despite coming back from an 8-4 deficit to 9-9, Wyckoff lost, 11-9 in the tiebreaker.

At second singles, Bramante lost 6-3, 6-4, while Murphy, at the number four spot, dropped a close 6-4 first-set and lost the second, 6-0. At five singles, Brande Hansteen (Wyncote/Cheltenham) was defeated 6-1, 6-1 and at the six spot Colfer fell, 6-0, 6-1.

The Huskies, now 0-3, will face Northern Kentucky on Monday morning at 8:00 a.m. in Hilton Head, SC.
