Bloomsburg Sweeps Women's Tennis Awards From PSAC

BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team swept the major awards from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division for the 2006-07 season.

Earning the PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Year was senior Emily Murphy (Worcester/Methacton) while freshman Katie Hasyn (Lansdale/North Penn) was named the PSAC Eastern Division Rookie of the Year. In addition, head coach Marty Coyne was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year.

Along with the major awards, Iida Hokkanen (Helsinki, Finland) was named All-PSAC in singles, while the doubles teams of Murphy and Hokkanen and Tracey Nissenbaum (Allentown/William Allen) and Hasyn were also named All-PSAC.

Murphy, who was named All-PSAC for the third straight season, finished her senior season with a 14-9 overall record and 62-39 for her career. She went 4-2 in conference tournament play this season and 12-4 in doubles action. The 2006 MVP of the team championships, Murphy led Bloomsburg to an undefeated record (4-0) in conference play and an appearance in the NCAA East Regional. She was also named the ITA Senior Player of the Year for the East Region in NCAA II tennis and earned PSAC East Player of the Week honors once during the season.

Hasyn turned in a strong performance during her rookie campaign. She went 19-5 overall, including a 9-1 record at number two singles. She finished 3-2 in tournament play while going 14-5 in doubles. At the Bloomsburg Duals, Hasyn efforts included a 6-0 performance, winning three matches in singles and doubles play. Hasyn was also named the PSAC East Player of the Week twice during the season and earned team MVP honors for her play.

Coyne, in his 12th season as head coach for the Bloomsburg women's tennis program, guided his squad to a 19-4 overall finish, a perfect 4-0 in Eastern Division play and its 12th consecutive trip to the NCAA II Championship Tournament. Coyne has won seven PSAC crowns and is now a six-time PSAC Coach of the Year for women's tennis in the Eastern Division. He has earned an overall record of 199-56 and twice has been named the ITA East Regional Coach of the Year (2006, 2004).

Hokkanen, a senior, posted a record of 16-4 on the year playing primarily at number three singles. She was named the PSAC East Player of the Week on April 9th after dropping just two games during the week of play and also had a seven-match winning streak during the year. For her career, she posted a mark of 52-43.

In doubles, Murphy and Hokkanen earned All-PSAC honors after posting a record of 12-4 at number one doubles. At one point during the season the pair won eight consecutive matches and 10 of 12.

The team of Nissenbaum and Hasyn posted a mark of 15-4 at number two doubles for Bloomsburg. During the year the team won eight straight and nine of 10.
