Bloomsburg Women's Tennis Advances to NCAA Final Sixteen
BLOOMSBURG, PA - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team downed Slippery Rock University 5-0 on Friday morning in the second round of the NCAA East Regional Tournament at Bloomsburg University. The win advances Huskies to the NCAA Final Sixteen in Altamonte Springs, Florida starting on May 9.
Bloomsburg took a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches and needed just two singles wins to take the match 5-0.
Allison Carney (Muncy/Muncy) and Torie Cunningham (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) got the first point, taking their number three doubles match 8-2. At number two doubles, Katie Hasyn (Lansdale/North Penn) and Tracy Nissenbaum (Allentown/William Allen) got an 8-6 win to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Earning the final doubles point, the team of Iida Hokkanen (Helsinki, Finland/Aurajoen Lukio Turku) and Emily Murphy (Worcester/Methacton) won their hard-fought number one match in the tiebreaker 9-8(7-4).
In singles, Hasyn put the Huskies up 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at number two. Cunningham then sealed the team victory for Bloomsburg at number four singles where she was a 6-3, 6-1 winner.
With the loss, Slippery Rock ends the season 23-6 overall, a school record for most wins in a season.
Bloomsburg moves to 19-3 on the year and will take on second ranked Armstrong Atlantic (27-0) at the Final Sixteen in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Wednesday.
