Faretta Claims Top Spot at ITA Regional Tournament

BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University's Danielle Farretta (Altoona/Altoona HS) won the ITA East Regional Division II Intercollegiate Tennis Championship Monday afternoon hosted by Shippensburg University.

On Sunday, Faretta, a senior, knocked off West Liberty's Velvet Nelson 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals and topped Xerli Woo of Dowling 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, to advance to the finals. In Monday's final, Faretta defeated Tara Elkin of West Liberty, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, in the finals to earn the bid to play in the ITA National Small College Championship in Memphis, TN, Oct. 21-25.

Also in championship draw singles, Heather Miller (Lancaster/Penn Manor HS) topped Meryem Chaoui of Philadelphia University, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, to reach the other semifinal but fell to Elkin, 6-4, 6-0. Bartsch lost in the quarterfinals to Woo, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

After claiming the singles title, Farretta and teammate Erin Bartsch (Warren/Warren HS) lost the championship "A" draw doubles title to Yutaka Izutsu and Anna Boskova of Concordia. The duo defeated the top Bloomsburg doubles squad 6-4, 7-6 (2). Izutsu was doubles champion in 1998 when she teamed with her sister, who has since graduated

Bloomsburg's other team in the championship draw, Heather Miller and Katie Kochera (Bethel/Tulpehocken HS), dropped its second round match to the team of Dawn Vighetti and K. Klouse of West Virginia Wesleyan, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

In "B" draw doubles, the team of Miranda Campbell (Woodbine, NJ/Middle Township HS) and Jen Esposito (Lock Haven/Lock Haven HS) won three matches Sunday to reach the final. The pair rolled over the team of Rossavitch and Wilson from Dowling, 8-0, then knocked off Carr and Schrock of West Liberty, 8-2, and reached the final with an 8-2 win over Baum and Gotschall of Shippensburg. In the final, Campbell and Esposito defeated Abbie Switzer and Kristina Eger of Millersville, 9-7.

The ITA National Small College Championship will gather the winners of all eight regionals for the opportunity to play in the Division I ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Feb. 3-6, 2000, in Dallas, TX.
