Bloomsburg Splits at Mansfield Cross Country Race

MANSFIELD—The Bloomsburg University women's cross country team took first place at the Mansfield University tri-meet with Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon with the men's team taking second place.

The women's team finished with 26 points compared with 37 for Mansfield and 76 for Lock Haven.

Leading the Huskies was Sarah Bounds (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) who covered the three-mile course on 19:17 to finish third, while Mary Bacher (New Tripoli/Allentown Central Catholic) was fourth in 19:28 and Katie Conlon (Inkerman/Pittston Area) fifth in 19:34. Also, Terri Sutherland (Dauphin/Central Dauphin East) was sixth in 19:35 with Karen Hause (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) eighth overall in 19:58. A gap of just 41 seconds separated the Huskies' top five finishers.

On the men's side, Lock Haven won the event with 31 points, while Bloomsburg was second with 41 points and Mansfield third at 59.

The Huskies were led by Justin Shepherd (Cranberry/Seneca Valley) who was fourth overall in 15:42 on the three mile course. Chip Carnes (Linden/Williamsport) was seventh in 15:57, while Justin Dosch (Sunbury/Shikellamy) was eighth in 15:59. Also, Michael Espinosa (Media/Penncrest) was ninth in 16:04 with Paul Gardiner (Airville/Kennardale) 13th in 16:16.

The Huskies will be back in action next week hosting the 2003 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships.
