IUP's Sawtelle Wins PSAC Cross Country Individual Title; Edinboro Takes Team Crown

BLOOMSBURG—IUP's Mindy Sawtelle led from start to finish taking first-place at the 2003 PSAC Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The freshmen completed the Bloomsburg course in a course-record time of 21:35, over a minute in front of any other competitor. Edinboro captured the team crown finishing with 57 points. Indiana was second with 65 points and East Stroudsburg took third with 114 points.

Edinboro had five runners in the top 20, putting them ahead of Indiana in the team scoring. Jessica Muldovan was Edinboro's first runner in, placing fifth with a time of 23:23. Kelly Richards was four places behind Muldovan, finishing ninth, completing the course in 23:46.

Also finishing in the top 10 was Vanessa Andes of East Stroudsburg in second place, with a time of 22:25 and Clarion's Melissa Terwilleger was third with a time of 22:55. In fourth was Kelly Stewart from Shippensburg, who finished with a time of 23:10 while Nicole Blaesser of Indiana was sixth in 23:26. Kutztown's Molly Lare was seventh and Rachel Hall of Mansfield was eighth with times of 23:28 and 23:44, respectively. Richards was ninth, while, Charity Learn of Mansfield rounded out the top ten with a time of 23:50.

Host Bloomsburg took ninth in the event, competing without their top two runners, Danielle Kramer (Shamokin/Shamokin) and Amanda Pisano (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown). Kramer took ninth in last year's championships, while Pisano was 12th. This year, Mary Bacher (New Tripoli/Allentown Central Catholic) paced the Huskies, placing 31st with a time of 24:42. Katie Conlon (Inkerman/Pittston Area) and Sarah Bounds (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) were 40th and 47th for the Huskies with times of 24:55 and 25:07, respectively. Rounding out the scoring for Bloomsburg were Terri Sutherland (Dauphin/Central Dauphin East) in 50th, with a time of 25:15 and Karen Hause (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) in 64th, finishing in 25:57.

Next weekend, Lock Haven will host the NCAA Division II East Regional Championships where the teams will compete to earn a trip to the NCAA National Championships at North Carolina State.
