Huskies Sweep Quad Meet at Slippery Rock
BLOOMSBURG— The Bloomsburg University men's and women's cross country teams were both victorious at a quad meet at Slippery Rock on Saturday. The men won a tight race with 38 points to host Slippery Rock's 39 points while the women won handily beating their next closet opponent by 24 points. The Huskies were originally scheduled to run at the Indiana (PA) Invitational but the meet was cancelled due to inclement weather.
On the men's side, Justin Shepherd (Cranberry/Seneca Valley) was the individual winner running the 7,500-meter course in 25:23. Paul Gardiner (Airville/Kennerdale) ran well, taking seventh in 26:41 while Michael Espinosa (Media/Penncrest) and David Sanford (Nescopeck/Central Columbia) crossed the line in 26:51 to take ninth and 10th respectively. Tim Marcoe (Lansdale/Lansdale Catholic) clocked in at 27:03 to take 11th place. Bill Shepardson's (McMurray/Peters Twp.) 12th place finish was crucial as it clinched the meet for the Huskies as they were tied with Slippery Rock's first five runners overall.
The women had a tremendous showing as Amber Hackenberg (Middleburg/Middleburg) finished the 5000-meter course in 20:23 to take first place. Amanda Pisano (Smithown, NY/Smithown) finished :14 behind her teammate to take second place while Karen Hause (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) finished 3rd in 23:03. Terri Sutherland (Dauphin/Central Dauphin East) also ran well for the Huskies, placing 5th in 21:10. Mary Bacher (New Tripoli/Allentown Central Catholic) rounded out Bloomsburg's top five as she finished seventh in 21:23.
The Huskies return to action on October 1st as they travel to Bucknell.
