KUTZTOWN--For the first time in school history, the Bloomsburg University women's cross country team can call itself conference champions. The Huskies won the 2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship on Saturday at Kutztown University to claim its first cross country title (men or women) ever.

The win by Bloomsburg also snapped a nine-year winning streak by the Edinboro cross country team.

Bloomsburg, which finished second a year, took the jump to the top spot finishing with 65 points to 99 for runner-up Indiana, Pa. The Huskies placed four runners in the top 15 with its fifth runner finishing 26th.

"Today the team executed beautifully," said Brandt. "They have been focused since the spring on winning a PSAC title and today all their hard work paid off."

"We had some concerns coming into the race," Brandt said. "We didn't know if our team was as good as we were early in the season and that might have worked to our advantage. The women ran a smart race, did not go fast, and surged over the second half of the race as a team to win the title."

"Bloomsburg now has a target on its back at NCAA Regionals," continued Brandt. "Our next goal is to win regionals and advance to national championships."

Leading the way for the Huskies on Saturday was senior Amber Hackenberg (Middleburg/Middleburg), who was fifth on the 6k course in 24:06 with sophomore Andrea Kellock (Lansdale/North Penn) who took ninth place in 24:27. In 12th place was sophomore Angela Borealo (Easton/Easton) with a time of 24:30 with teammate Beth Schwing (Hershey/Lower Dauphin) in a virtual tie in the same time of 24:30. Taking 26th was Ashley Shuck (Milton/Milton) in 25:24.

The Huskies will take part in the NCAA Regionals next week at Lock Haven.
