Cross Country Runners Earn All-Region Honors
SLIPPERY ROCK--The Bloomsburg University men's cross country team took home a fifth place finish, while the women's team finished sixth at the NCAA Atlantic Regional championships at Slippery Rock on Saturday.
On the men's side, with a total of 165 racers, Jim Stockley (Elverson/Twin Valley) earned All-Region honors with an 11th place finish in a time of 32:48. Stockley, one week after earning All-PSAC honors with a 14th place finish at the conference championships, earned All-Region honors on a course at Slippery Rock that was much harder and against a field that was much deeper.
Mike Dalton (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Pope John XXIII) was the Huskies' second finisher in 22nd place with a time of 33:21, while Dave Moyer (Boyertown/Boyertown) was third for BU and 27th overall in 33:35. Finishing 33rd overall was Misha Litvinov (Drums/Hazleton) in 33:46, while Auston Martzall (Myerstown/ELCO) 48th was 55th in 34:35. Jared Arnold (Philadelphia/Carver) was the Huskies final finisher in 85th place in 36:04. Arnold battled an injury all week and was not at full strength one week after being the Huskies second finisher at the PSAC championships.
"This is was a great team effort by our men," said coach Karen Brandt. "We finished fifth in the region, which takes in not just the PSAC, but conferences as well. We showed a lot of depth, especially since two of our top runners from last week were not in our top five this week. I am very proud of our guys."
For the women, in a field of 172, two Huskies earned All-Region honors. Andrea Kellock (Lansdale/North Penn) was the Huskies top finisher in 22:25 for seventh place and earned All-Region honors for the second time in her career. Ashley Shuck (Milton/Milton) also earned All-Region honors with a time 12th place finish in a time of 22:49.
Shannon Hoffman (Watsontown/Warrior Run) was 21st overall in 23:10, while Beth Schwing (Hershey/Lower Dauphin) was 52nd in 24:12. Finishing fifth for Bloomsburg was Caitlin Heller (Bloomsburg/Nixa, Mo.) in 68th place with a time of 24:53, while Christa Johnson (Nescopeck/Berwick) was 69th in 24:57 and Katie Meck (Dillsburg/Northern) 74th in 25:09 to round out the Huskies team.
"Our women's team did a great job as well today with two All-Region performances," said Brant. "We have had several of our runners battle injuries all season long and they ran very hard today. I'm proud of them all."
