Why Study Theatre at Bloomsburg University?
An Award Winning Program

Past awards from KCACTF include: finalists in the Irene Ryan acting competition; national Barbizon design winner and nominees; a national commendation for acting; first place in Tech Olympics; three Best Original Short Play winners; nominee for National Student Playwriting Award; ten Certificates of Merit for Ensemble Acting; finalist in the SDC Directing competition. In addition, Bloomsburg University theatre has received invitations to perform many productions at KCACTF, including Angels in America, Night of the Wannabes, Proof, Baby with the Bathwater, Anon(ymous) and excerpts from Bat Boy: The Musical, Trojan Women, and Reckless.
We regularly co-produce work with the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, a professional theatre in the heart of Bloomsburg. Founded in 1978, BTE is a resident professional ensemble dedicated to quality entertainment and educational programs for the region. BTE artists regularly serve as adjunct faculty and our students and alumni have worked at BTE as actors, designers, technicians, and stage managers, as interns and as guest artists.
Catalog descriptions of the wide variety of Theatre courses can be found by viewing our course catalog. Select "T" on the top menu for Theatre.
We offer experience in a variety of types of plays and musicals. The 2012-13 season includes Jack and Jill, Twelve Angry Jurors, Flood Stories, Too (a co-production with the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble) and The Underpants. Past productions include: musicals Assassins, Into the Woods, City of Angels, Floyd Collins, Urinetown, Bat Boy, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer's Night Dream, Romeo and Juliet, As You Like It, Measure for Measure, and The Winter’s Tale; contemporary plays by Tony Kushner, Caryl Churchill, Lanford Wilson, Sam Shepard, Eric Bogosian, Rebecca Gilmore; and original student-written one act and full-length plays.
While maintaining our reputation for great teaching and our focus on students, our faculty members are all working theatre professionals. In the past five years alone, faculty members have acted in, directed, or designed over 30 professional productions.
Our Students Succeed
Bloomsburg University graduates are working in professional theatres across the country, including theatres in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, and many others. Notable alums include James McMenamin who received the Laura M. Pels Acting Prize from the Williamstown Theatre Festival and appeared in the acclaimed production of Our Town in New York. Alum Jimmi Simpson is a regular in TV and movies, including Late Night with David Letterman, Loser, HBO's Carnivale and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Our graduates are working backstage as well, for great shows such as Saturday Night Live, Cirque du Soleil, Sea World Orlando, Movin’ Out, Chicago, The Producers and others. Find out more about what alumni are doing by viewing our alumni page.
We offer connections to summer study abroad opportunities in London and Cyprus.
