Atty. General Tom Corbett to speak at Saturday commencement

Pennsylvania's Attorney General Tom Corbett will be the speaker for BU's undergraduate commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 10. Nearly 1,100 seniors will receive bachelor's degrees Saturday during the first commencement ceremonies on BU's new Academic Quadrangle and the first during the tenure of BU President David Soltz. BU will hold two commencement ceremonies for undergraduates on May 10. Students from the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Science and Technology will graduate at 10 a.m.; students from the Colleges of Business and Professional Studies will receive their degrees at 3 p.m. Details.

Rec Center to close early today, open to staff next week

The Student Rec Center will close at 5 p.m. today, May 9. The center is free and open to faculty and staff next week. Summer memberships to use the facility are due May 19.

Life experiences influence BU nursing graduate's career in nursing

Seunghyo Hong's life began in a rural South Korean village where he was born without the aid of doctors, nurses or public health workers. The outlook for his survival was bleak until a Buddhist monk gave spiritual advice to his mother and he began to gain strength. Hong, a May 2008 graduate of BU's nursing program, shared his story of survival, a story that led him to a career as a registered nurse, at the recent Johnson amd Johnson Campaign for Nursing's Future gala fundraising event in Philadelphia. Parking changes for commencement

Parking will be restricted in the lots north of Bakeless and McCormick centers on Friday, May 9, after 4 p.m. Those lots will be reserved for VIP and handicapped parking for graduate commencement.

On Saturday, May 10, general parking will be at the direction of staff throughout campus. The following areas will be reserved for undergraduate commencement:

• North of Bakeless and McCormick: Handicap parking and people in need of assistance
• Rear of Waller: VIP secondary parking Area
• East Centennial (Main): Handicap, people in need of assistance and VIP Parking
• East of Centennial (Elevated): Platform party
• Chestnut Street Meter Lot: VIP parking
• Sutliff Lot: Faculty parking only
• Staff working commencement should park in the Old Science Lot or Behind Elwell

BU professor maps northeastern PA geology

Nineteenth century technology still has a place in the modern world. Duane Braun, professor of geosciences at BU, has the proof. With a waterproof notebook in hand, Braun covers up to 500 square miles each summer. Four days a week, 10 to 12 hours each day, he charts glacial deposits and the type and depth of material just below the topsoil. During the academic year, at night and on weekends, he draws the maps using plastic Mylar sheets on top of a light table. Over the last 25 years, he and his undergraduate field assistants have charted 9,000 square miles of northeastern Pennsylvania, divided into 157 quadrangles. Details.

BU professors win TALE Outstanding Teaching award

Two BU faculty members were selected for the 2008 Teaching and Learning Enchancement (TALE) Outstanding Teaching award. Jennifer Stotter (left), assistant professor of sociology, social work and criminal justice, and Margie Eckroth-Bucher (right), associate professor of nursing, will be recognized for their outstanding teaching at BU's undergraduate spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 10. Winners were nominated by May graduates. Details.

BU Latin sorority chapter recognized at national convention

BU's chapter of the national Latin Sorority, Chi Upsilon Sigma, was recognized at the sorority's National Convention in Dallas, Tex. on April 19. The Grand Chapter Board presented BU's Iota Chapter, with the Invictus Award for Most Improved Chapter. Current executive board members of the BU chapter are Crystal Diaz, president; Elaine Gonzalez, vice president; Julie Sanchez, treasurer; Christine Vega, community service coordinator; Tania Aponte, parliamentarian; and Nancy Ayllon-Ramirez, public relations. Patricia Dorame-Holoviak, associate professor of languages and cultures is the chapter adviser.

BU students celebrate semester of outreach to middle school students

Students from Stephanie Schlitz's Composition One English class and the Fine Arts and Humanities Living Learning Community celebrated the close of the Fine Arts and Humanities Outreach Program with Danville Middle School students on Saturday, May 3. During the semester-long program, which was designed to expose middle schoolers to the fine arts and humanities and to offer them an early introduction to college life, Bloomsburg students served as mentors to Danville Middle School students, and together they participated in five different events, including a campus visit and residence hall tour; an African American Read-In; a pottery class; a Celebrity Artist Series performance; and an end-of-year picnic. The program was organized by Schlitz, Amy LoVallo (senior, English major), Erin DeLong (sophomore, Sec. Ed. English major), and Kayla Wolfe (freshman, English major) and was made possible by support from a College of Liberal Arts Special Initiatives Award and the Fine Arts and Humanities Living Learning Community.

Reading Conference brings authors, literacy experts to BU

The 44th annual BU Reading Conference will feature lectures and workshops by children's authors, illustrators, educators and literacy specialists. The conference will begin on Thursday, May 15, at 8:30 a.m., with sessions ending on Friday, May 16, at 2:30 p.m. It is sponsored by the Bloomsburg University Reading Center. Details.

BU apartments close May 10

The upper campus and Kile Apartments will close on Saturday, May 10, at 11 p.m. All students must check out and hand in keys by this time. No exceptions will be made.

Lower campus residence halls close May 10

All lower campus residence halls will close Saturday, May 10, at noon without exception. For closing/check out procedures go to the residence life web site.
