Outstanding BU Women honored

Alicia King Redfern was honored as BU's Woman of the Year at the Women's History Month Reception in the Kehr Union Ballroom last Thursday. Student Nicole Jabbour was named Outstanding Leader; student Adrienne Mael was named Outstanding Scholar; residence life director Linda Sowash was honored for Outstanding Service; and faculty member Bridget Klein was honored for Outstanding Courage.

At the reception, Redfern King, associate professor of psychology, was praised for the leadership she has shared with many organizations on campus and in the community. She is a member of BU's Commission on the Status of Women, Women's Issues Committee, the Female Retention Committee, the Consortium Conference Committee and APSCUF Gender and Social Justice Committee. She played an integral role in the Working Women Count report, both chairing the committee and doing the analyses of the 2004 report and the follow up report which will be shared in the near future. Redfern chaired the Board of Trustees of the United Way of Columbia County and served as president of the Board of the Columbia Montour Women's Center.

Jabbour was honored for the work she has done as a leader in several organizations, including: served as president of the Social Work Club for two years and serving on teh Community Advisory Council for the social work program. She also arranged to have an educational program on HPV held on campus and is helping other school hold similar programs.

Sowash was praised for many years of service and leadership in BU's residence hall and food service areas. Also an alumna of BU, Sowash has had a great impact on the aesthics of of campus residence halls and dining areas.

Mael, an anthropology major, has conducted research on attitudes of BU students toward marriage, family and divorce. She has presented her findings at a national conference as well as campus.

Klein, a new faculty member in BU's American Sign Language program, was instrumental in bringing the program out of moratorium. She teaches an exerimental course, "Deaf Literature," and has worked to expose students to deaf art, including literature, storytelling, painters, poets and playwrights.
