Activities planned for BU's Parents' and Family Weekend
Families of BU students will get a taste of campus life during the 38th annual Parents' and Family Weekend Friday to Sunday, Sept. 12 to 14. The weekend's events will include athletic competitions, professional entertainment, classroom visits and recreational opportunities.
BU President David Soltz will welcome family members during an open forum Saturday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. in Kehr Union's Fireside Lounge. Other weekend highlights include:
- A show by Yurasits: The Mad Hungarian, Friday, Sept. 12, at 9 p.m. in Kehr Union Ballroom. The free, family-friendly show will spotlight Tom Yurasits' feats of escape, magic, mind reading and comedy.
- Laser Tag Battlecruiser, Saturday, Sept. 13, 3 to 7 p.m., Academic Quad (Rain Location - Kehr Union Ballroom). Play against your own family members or play against other families in this giant inflatable laser tag arena equipped with sound, lights and fog. Students and family members play for free. Sponsored by the Program Board.
- A football matchup between BU's Huskies and the Mercyhurst College Lakers Saturday, Sept. 13, at 1:30 p.m. in the newly renovated Redman Stadium. At halftime, the Huskies Marching Band will perform and the winning essay in the Parents of the Day contest will be read. Tickets, at $8 for adults and $3 for seniors and students, will be available at the gate starting at 11:30 a.m. Admission is free for BU students and children under 5.
- A Celebrity Artist Series presentation, "Forbidden Broadway: 25th Anniversary Tour," a musical spoof of some of Broadway's biggest shows, Saturday, Sept. 13, at 6:30 and 9 p.m. in Carver Hall, Kenneth S. Gross Auditorium. Tickets, available for family members at the BU student price of $10 per person, may be purchased by calling (570) 389-4409 or at www.boomu.edu/today/celebrity.php.
- Field hockey, BU versus Millersville University, Saturday, Sept. 13, at noon at Sports Stadium and the Bloomsburg Invitational Tennis Tournament, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13 and 14, at 9 a.m., at the upper campus tennis courts. BU's men's and women's tennis teams will challenge teams from Bucknell and Niagara universities.
The weekend's events will begin informally Friday, Sept. 12, when family members may sit in on their students' classes, with permission from instructors. On Saturday, Sept. 13, BU's upper campus climbing wall will be open free of charge from 3 to 6 p.m. and a buffet dinner will be served in Scranton Commons from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Activities on Sunday, Sept. 14, will include a Protestant worship service and Catholic mass, both at 11 a.m. in Kehr Union.
