Student member position on Pennsylvania State Board of Education available
The Pennsylvania State Board of Education has amended their bylaws to now include one non-voting post secondary student member and one non-voting postsecondary student member elect. These positions will provide school students from Pennsylvania's colleges, universities, and career schools with an opportunity to interact with adult board members and help create education policies for the 1.8 millions k-12 students and 680,000 students in higher education institutions.
Because of the different types of post-secondary education institutions, there will be a rotation of which division will nominate a student from year to year. For the upcoming 2008-2009 school year, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education will nominate students for the Student Member Elect position.
The responsibilities of the student member include:
- Representing Pennsylvania students by attending all meetings of the Pennsylvania State Board of Education
- Gather and disseminate information relevant to the Board of Education and students
- Participate in committee meetings, public roundtables, public hearings, and other activities of the Board
- Inform and consult with peers statewide as to policy matters pending Board action
- Stay informed about policy pending before the Board by reviewing materials provided and discussing issues with other college students
To qualify, the applicant must:
- Be enrolled in a Pennsylvania institution of postsecondary education and be a sophomore, junior, or senior during his/her term
- Be able to attend all scheduled Pennsylvania State Board of Education meetings
- Have above average grades and be responsible for all missed school work while attending the meetings
The university will provide the necessary phone, mailing, and electronic communications resources, ensure the student will receive excused absences for all board obligations, and provide an option for students to receive course credit through independent study or similar mean for their participation as a student representative to the State Board of Education.
