Alliance Against Homelessness delivers 50 bags of clothing

The Northeast Pennsylvania Alliance Against Homelessness, in association with several community organizations, donated more than 50 bags of clothing, winter wear, and blankets to the Reach Homeless Shelter in Wilkes-Barre, Friday, Oct. 10.

Independence Ford, of Twp., donated a cargo van and the services of a driver. Among the donations were two boxes of blankets from the parish of Saint Luke's Lutheran Church on Lightstreet Road , Bloomsburg. The Student Association from Berwick Middle School donated 10 "ugly quilts" they made.

Spectrum Magazine, produced by BU journalism students for the permanent residents of northeastern Pennsylvania, sponsors the year-round clothing program for the region's homeless. This year's drive on the BU campus officially begins Nov. 10.

Annelise Chayka and Kurt Nystrom, Spectrum assistant editors, are leaders of the BU student chapter of the Alliance that also provides additional assistance, including setting up and carrying out "soup kitchen" meals and other assistance. Spectrum staff will be hosts for a picnic, Sunday, at the Gatehouse, Danville, a residential facility for homeless persons.

Eighteen members (13 students and five staff/faculty) of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance Against Homelessness sponsored a picnic, Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Gatehouse, a Danville transitional shelter for the homeless. The Alliance grew out of a concept by Gary F. Clark, professor emeritus of art, and had its base within Spectrum magazine.

In March, BU members will go to New Orleans to work on a Habitat for Humanities project.
