Extreme makeovers planned
Three buildings - Bakeless, Hartline and Nelson Field House - will be off-line for renovation during 2009, members of the Planning and Budget Committee learned during the Nov. 13 meeting.
Bakeless will be renovated in phases, starting in mid-December when the project is bid. All of "old" Hartline will be down throughout its project, which will run from May 2009 through August 2010. And bids for the Nelson project are due in January 2009 with work starting in March and completed in summer 2009 and summer 2010.
Eric Milner, assistant vice president for administration, said the timing of projects is determined by "how the money flows."
Also during the meeting:
- The committee approved the enrollment management subcommittee's recommendation seeking an increase of 3 percent FTEs in BU's enrollment for fall 2009.
- Chris Keller, director of admissions, said enrollment is on target for spring. He said freshman admissions may be lower than expected because campus housing is not available.
- Richard Rugen, vice president for administration and finance, said BU's budget recession plan would pull from funds saved through vacant positions that are budgeted but not filled. Gov. Ed Rendell has asked state agencies to set aside 4.5 percent of their allocation for possible return to the state due to economic conditions. For BU, that amount equals about $1.6 million.
