David H. McCormick, who literally grew up on BU's campus, will return Saturday, May 2, to deliver the commencement address at the 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. undergraduate ceremonies in the Academic Quadrangle.
Now Distinguished Service Professor of Information Technology, Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College, McCormick is the son of Maryan and James H. McCormick, BU's president from 1973 to 1983 and the first chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, now observing its 25th anniversary. As a youngster, David McCormick lived in Buckalew with his parents and brother, Douglas. He graduated from Bloomsburg Area High School in 1983.
Since leaving Bloomsburg, David McCormick has held senior leadership positions in business and government. As treasury under secretary for international affairs, he oversaw policies affecting global financial markets. Before joining the treasury department, he served as deputy national security adviser for international economic policy and as President George W. Bush's personal representative to the Group of Eight industrialized countries. McCormick also oversaw policies affecting more than $200 billion in annual high technology exports as under secretary of commerce for export administration.
McCormick received a mechanical engineering degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a doctorate from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He is a former Army officer and a veteran of the first Gulf War.
Graduates from the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science and Technology will receive their degrees Saturday, May 2, at 10 a.m.; students from the College of Business and Professional Studies will graduate at 3 p.m. In case of rain, commencement will be moved to the Nelson Field House.
Master's and doctoral degrees will be conferred during a ceremony Friday, May 1, at 6 p.m. in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall.
