Graduate School Scholarships

  • Andrew Clickard was awarded a graduate assistantship from Temple University in 2022.
  • Dario D'Amato was awarded a graduate assistantship from University of Maryland in 2021.
  • Juliette Gudknecht was awarded a graduate assistantship from Columbia University in 2021.
  • Zachary Norfolk was awarded a graduate assistantship from Penn State University in 2020.
  • Ian Birdwell was awarded a graduate fellowship from the University of New Mexico in 2020.

Actuarial Exams

  • Aaron Butters passed the P, FM, IFM, and SRM actuarial exams in 2021 while he was a student at Mansfield University. After graduation, he passed the PA, STAM, and FAM-L exams.
  • Eric Zalewski passed the P, FM, and IFM actuarial exams in 2020 while he was a student at Bloomsburg University. After graduation, he passed the MAS-1 actuarial exam.
  • Tammy Rachau passed the P and FM actuarial exams in 2017 while she was a student at Lockhaven University. After graduation, she accepted a position as a clinical quality analyst at United Health Care.

Internships

  • Robert Bennett completed a summer research fellowship in 2022 with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) where he worked with neural networks and machine learning to get a computer to identify and report orientations of objects in a photo. He also completed a summer research fellowship in 2021 with NIST where he statistically analyzed the uncertainty inherent in different algorithms analyzing MRI images.
  • Juliette Gudknecht completed an internship in data science in 2021 with Geisinger where she analyzed and ran regressions on a data set of 90,000 patients’ health data for genetic disorders and co-occurring disorders in autism spectrum disorder. In 2020, she completed an internship in data science with Authentic Social where she combined her data science skills with sales analytics to improve their social media strategies. In 2020, she completed an internship in data analytics with the U.S. Department of State where she developed data scraping and analysis logic for building a neural network model to predict the outcome of visa applications.
  • Tammy Rachau completed a summer internship in 2016 with Capital Blue Cross in Harrisburg where she worked as a clinical quality analyst.

REU Research Experience

  • Jacob Nocentino was awarded a REU research experience sponsored by the National Science Foundation in 2019 to study machine learning.

Research Awards

  • Andrew Clickard won an “Outstanding Student Paper Presentation Award” at the 2021 MAA Mathfest.
  • Andrew Clickard gave the presentation “Synthetic Geometry in Curved Simplices” at the 2022 national conference of the AMS and MAA, at the 2021 MAA Mathfest, at Binghamton University’s Graduate Conference in Algebra and Topology in 2021, and at the EPADEL Spring 2021 conference.
  • Andrew Clickard gave the presentation “On the closure of the Symmetric Difference Property under Product Construction” at the EPADEL Fall 2021 conference.
  • Devyn Lesher presented his research at the Fall 2014 Southeastern Sectional Meeting of the American Mathematical Society at the University of North Carolina. The presentation was about a paper he coauthored with Dr. Lynd that was published in Mathematics Magazine.

Math Tests and Contests

  • Andrew Clickard scored in the 98th percentile on the Major Field Test in Mathematics in 2022.
  • Caleb Beard scored in the 96th percentile on the Major Field Test in Mathematics in 2020.
  • Zachary Norfolk scored in the 96th percentile on the Major Field Test in Mathematics in 2020.
  • Zachary Hostetler scored in the 91st percentile on the Major Field Test in Mathematics in 2018.
  • Steven Hricenak scored in the 91st percentile on the Major Field Test in Mathematics in 2018.
  • Luke Vukstra earned 6th place, out of 400 students, at the Mathematics Association of America national Problem-Solving Competition in 2016.
  • Collin Shoop achieved a perfect score on the Major Field Test in Mathematics in 2015.
