Participants of the event should develop hands-on, educational activities that focus on celebrating the earth as well as the efforts we have to maintain to ensure a sustainable future.   The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. They had participants and organizers ranging from Democrats and Republicans to labor union members and religious leaders, it was an event that brought people together. On the first Earth Day, millions of people joined in and some estimate that as many as one in ten Americans participated. Now, in over 180 countries, it is a day to increase awareness of environmental challenges and celebrate the life-sustaining good things the Earth provides.  Earth Day will be an opportunity to learn how to nurture our earth and our future. This event will host your favorite local businesses, many student clubs and organizations, and a free thrifting experience. Attendees are encouraged to bring unwanted clothing, shoes, and even accessories that can be traded with other students. After the event, any leftover clothing will be donated.   Green Campus Initiative is dedicated to educating students on environmentally sustainable practices.
