Email: apham@bloomu.edu Barbie Izquierdo was born and raised in North Philadelphia in the Hunting Park section, Orianna Street to be exact. Her family experienced a lot of hardships like food insecurity firsthand as a child. Living in a cycle of poverty was frustrating, and from a young age she knew there was a better quality of life to strive for.  She knew they deserved the things they needed to survive. When she became a mother herself, and saw the challenges she was facing alone, she couldn’t take it sitting quietly.  This experience ignited her desperate search for change — a passion to take action so her children would not repeat this experience. As a result, for the past 13 years she has been a community activist and advocate determined to end the cycle of generational food insecurity and poverty. Her story of success and struggle, struggle and success, was featured in A Place at The Table, the award-winning film about hunger and food insecurity in America. As a recognized and respected voice in the fight against hunger, she has been a keynote speaker at the White House during President Obama’s administration. She has had the opportunity to work alongside some of the most powerful voices demanding an end to hunger in America, and amazing organizations that have valued her voice and welcomed her to be a part of the much needed changes that are needed to eradicate food insecurity. She has been recognized by Google, as an “American spokesperson”; and has been featured on BBC World News, CNN, AP, in the Washington Post, and many other print and digital media.   McCormick Center Room 2303 Bloomsburg University webteam@bloomu.edu America/New_York public
