Ayanna Jones, founder and president of The Sankofa Village Community Garden, will speak on day two of the Symposium on Hunger
Ayanna Jones is the founder and president of The Sankofa Village Community Garden, a community garden located in a low-income neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pa. According to the United States Department of Treasury, 47 percent of individuals living in Pittsburgh experience food insecurities. The Sankofa Community Garden is focused on promoting food self-sufficiency along with address the issue of food apartheid.
Under Jones’ leadership, the Sankofa Community Garden has established programs such as the Youth Community Garden, the Geraldine B. Hill Senior Garden Project and the Farm From a Box program. The community garden has recently established the Bond Bike Rental program to provide low income youth opportunities to engage in healthy activities, such as biking.
