As a teacher, I have found that the level of interest generated by the instructor is independent of that generated by the class material; I was most motivated by exceptional teachers, not exceptional material. Additionally, I found that a micro-level approach, one that ignored the "big picture" was difficult to absorb. Therefore, I take the approach of a both scientist and a practitioner in the classroom, emphasizing not only scientific principles and theories, but also their everyday application. In my experience, students find the material presented in such a way to be more personally relevant and meaningful, and are therefore more actively involved in the learning process.
