1. RATIONALE FOR POLICY
To provide a procedure for nominating and conferring noninstructional Bloomsburg University employees to Noninstructional Emeritus status.
2. KEYWORDS
Noninstructional Emeritus; emeritus
3. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The original policy was written sixteen (16) years ago. The revisions to the new policy a) reduce the years needed to be considered for noninstructional emeritus status from fifteen (15) to ten (10); b) require written justification from the department supervisor describing why the individual should receive emeritus status; c) include the word resigned, in addition to retired, under eligibility; d) list the specific departments that the noninstructional emeritus or emerita should contact to receive the specific privileges.
4. POLICY
Eligibility
To be eligible for emeritus status at Bloomsburg University, a non-instructional employee shall:
- Have retired or resigned as an employee of Bloomsburg University.
- Have served with distinction at Bloomsburg University for a minimum of ten (10) years.
- Be nominated by a majority vote of employees in the retiring or resigning employee’s department to the Bloomsburg University president.
Procedure for Conferring Emeritus Status
- After an employee has declared his/her intent to retire or resign from the university and this has been accepted by the president of the university, it is the responsibility of the appropriate department to consider emeritus status for that individual.
- Within one calendar year after the employee has retired/resigned, the department shall conduct the nomination of the employee for emeritus status. If a majority of the department concurs, the nomination shall be forwarded, to the department supervisor. The supervisor will then forward the nomination to the division vice president, with the written justification describing why the individual should be awarded emeritus status. The vice president will forward his/her recommendation along with the accompanying department vote and justification to the university president.
- The president may then recommend emeritus status for the employee and present his/her recommendation at a regular meeting of the Council of Trustees for its action.
- Copies of the emeritus conferring letter will be sent to the Andruss Library, the Community Activities Office, the Vice President for University Advancement and the Vice President for Administration and Finance in order to provide notification that privileges are to be conferred.
