The Big Event

The Big Event

The Big Event is a student-run community service event at Bloomsburg University that gives our students the opportunity to help and assist businesses and residents of the Town of Bloomsburg and it's surrounding communities.

This single day community service event is held every year during the spring semester and is run entirely by the Bloomsburg University Community Government Association. By registering your group or organization, you'll have a great chance to serve local areas and gain community service hours. This event is open to all students on campus.

Previous Big Events

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Big Event looked a little different. Student clubs and organizations donated items and assembled gift boxes for the Bloomsburg community.

Out of safety concerns for Bloomsburg University students and the Bloomsburg community due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Big Event was cancelled.

Huskies came together again this year at the Community Government Association’s annual Big Event! With more than 2,000 student volunteers tackling more than 225 job sites throughout the town of Bloomsburg. Making the Big Event, well B-I-G in more ways than one!

Among the locations served were The First Presbyterian Church, Children’s Museum, Kocher Park and more than 100 local residences. Student volunteers tackled a host of chores such as raking, gardening, mulching, removing debris, digging and various spring-cleaning duties.

Sponsored by the CGA, the single-day community service event gives students the opportunity to say "thank you" to Bloomsburg area residents and show appreciation for the community they live, learn and work in. CGA works hard each year to ensure that the largest student-run community service project on campus continues to grow each year.

They coordinate this one day event by combining campus, town and student officials and volunteers focusing on aspects, such as town recruitment, fundraising, transportation and student life.

In 2018, all the girls raked leaves that had accumulated since last fall from two giant pine oak trees! I just could not keep up and so there were many on the ground by spring. What a help these students were! And so pleasant. I depend on them and thank the university's organization each year for this effort to make The Big Event ... a great event!

They are really polite. They are enthusiastic, and they work really hard, so it is cool to see college students involved in the town.

They are doing a wonderful job with the raking and getting the mulch up and raking up the sticks and the leaves. They are very kind, and we look forward to it every year.
