Distance Education

SARA

SARA logo

The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) pertains to approval of distance education courses and programs offered across state lines by post secondary institutions that already have degree authorization in their home state. Approved colleges or universities in a SARA state therefore only need their home state authorization to offer distance education to students in any other SARA-member state, subject to certain limitations. Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania is an approved SARA institution, allowing BU to serve students participating in online education and field experiences in all 49 SARA participating states, DC, and the US Virgin Islands.

Please note that SARA has no effect on state professional licensing requirements. Each state has different standards for occupations that require a professional license or certification, and educational prerequisites may vary based upon the state. While Bloomsburg University is able to offer many programs that lead to licensure/certification in Pennsylvania, these same BU programs may not fully meet the educational requirements for licensure/certification of other states. Visit the State Authorization webpage for more information.
