CLEP (College Level Examination Program)
BU participates in the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) of the College Entrance Examination Board, which enables BU to grant course credit for scores earned on written examinations provided by CEEB/ETS.
Official CLEP transcripts must be sent to the registrar's office directly from the testing center. BU administers CLEP exams weekly. See www.bloomu.edu/testing for the registration form and available test dates.
Obtaining CLEP Transcripts
If you did not indicate a score recipient institution at the time of your exam, and you want to request your CLEP scores, you can do so by ordering a CLEP Transcript. This transcript is a cumulative score report of all the CLEP exams you have taken and scores you earned in the last 20 years.
To obtain a CLEP Transcript:
- Download the Transcript Request Form (.pdf/35k). Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader (latest version recommended). Mail completed form with your payment to CLEP to the address on the form.
- Or call (800) 257-9558 if ordering with a credit card. Please provide your name (at testing time), date of birth, social security number, exam title(s), test date, testing location/center, and where you want your scores to be sent.
There are two types of CLEP examinations:
- General exams, which cover the broad areas of English composition and essay, humanities, college mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences and history. General exams may only be taken before a student earns any college credits.
- Subject exams, which cover selected courses and may be taken prior to enrolling at BU or during the period of enrollment.
The College Board annually reviews CLEP examinations and makes recommendations to colleges and universities as to the appropriate number of credit to be granted to students based upon the score achieved on the CLEP examination.
In most instances, the number of credit granted by BU conforms to the CLEP recommendations. Occasionally, upon consultation with the department chairperson of the discipline related to the CLEP examination, the number of credits BU grants may differ from the CLEP recommendation.
Final decisions as to the number of credits BU will grant is at the discretion of the department chairperson in the discipline related to the CLEP examination. See website for the complete academic policy governing CLEP examinations.
Limitations on CLEP Credit
- If results of both the general examinations and the subject examinations are submitted for identical areas, duplicate credit will not be awarded.
- The student's official transcript will carry a notation of credit earned, but no grade shall be awarded.
- A student may not receive CLEP credit for a course they are currently registered, or for a course a passing grade previously was earned, or as a course repeat.
- Use of the CLEP tests permits BU to provide the well-prepared student with opportunities to demonstrate competence in areas of intellectual concern covered in basic courses, to receive credit in these areas and to enroll in advanced courses earlier.
