Isakson & Roe Requirements

Effective August 1, 2021, Section 1018 of Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, MD, Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020 requires institutions that participate in the educational assistance programs of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide additional disclosures for veterans approved for aid from the GI Bill.

It is our goal to ensure your transition from military service to academic environment goes as smoothly as possible. At BU, we value your military experience and want to save you time, effort, and money. The centerpiece of our efforts is the Office of Military and Veterans Resources, or as we like to call it—The Military Office.

• The BU MAC-RB (Military Academic Credit Review Board) provides an individualized process which ensures military service and experience is acknowledged as appropriate academic credit. It exists nowhere else in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Only a handful of colleges and universities nationwide are doing anything so service-intensive and academically grounded to support military students and veterans.

Shopping sheet disclosures

Schools must provide a covered individual (a student using benefits under chapter 30, 31, 32, 33 or 35 of title 38, U.S.C., or chapter 1606 or 1607 of title 10, U.S.C.) with a personalized shopping sheet that contains:

• Estimated total cost of the course that includes tuition, fees, books, supplies and any other additional costs. View the cost of attendance for BU programs.

• Other types of Federal financial aid, not administered by VA that are offered by the institution, that the individual may be qualified to receive. Learn about types of aid offered at BU and how to apply.
• Estimated amount of student loan debt the individual would have upon graduation. View BU's institutional data and the College Navigator.
• Information regarding graduation rates. View BU retention and graduation rates.
• Information regarding job-placement rates for graduates, if available. View BU graduates’ employment placement rates and further education based off of First Destination Survey responses. Professional and career development information is available from the Department of Alumni & Professional Engagement.

• Any additional requirements including training, experience, or examinations that are required to obtain a license, certification or approval for which the course of education prepares the individual. View BU's state licensure and certification program spreadsheet.

Schools must offer other information to facilitate comparison by the individual about aid packages offered by different educational institutions:

BU Financial Aid Shopping Sheet

BU’s Shopping Sheet information can be found in MyHusky. After logging into MyHusky, select the “View Financial Aid” link under the Finances section, then select the appropriate Aid Year (which would be the most recent year). Students will be able to compare financial aid information offered from other colleges or universities to help make an informed decision on where to attend school.

Consumer Finance Protection Bureau

A useful tool for incoming students can be found at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's Paying for College. This resource provides detailed financial information on higher education institutions and students can enter individualized information to better calculate according to their circumstances.

The College Scorecard

The College Scorecard is another resource for students to compare colleges, their fields of study, costs, admissions, results, and more.

The College Navigator

The National Center for Education Statistics offers the College Navigator to help students with various information when comparing schools.

GI Bill Comparison Tool

The US Department of Veterans Affairs has its own GI Bill Comparison Tool to compare academic programs and benefits by school.
