Dr. Erin Brummett, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies on the Bloomsburg campus, has been named the 2023 Thomas L. Veenendall Advisor of the Year by the National Communication Association.

This national award is granted by Lambda Pi Eta (LPH), which is the National Communication Association’s official honor society at four-year colleges and universities. The award is granted on an annual basis to an advisor who has dedicated their time, energy, and service to their chapter. Dr. Brummett has served as the faculty advisor to the Xi Omega LPH chapter on the Bloomsburg campus for over six years.

The Department of Communication Studies chairperson, Dr. Angela La Valley, as well as five of Dr. Brummett’s current and previous students who served as executive board members of the LPH Xi Omega chapter, submitted nomination letters on her behalf for the award. Dr. La Valley wrote, “To say that Dr. Brummett manifests the six goals of Lambda Pi Eta would be a massive understatement. She puts in countless hours working with our students to help plan events that promote the discipline, as well as the professional and personal development of the students themselves. The students greatly appreciate her positive energy, generous spirit, and her selfless and accepting attitude.”

The 2022-2023 Chapter President and recent Department of Communication Studies graduate, Luke Yingling, was also one of the nominators for the award. “I truly cannot put into words the impact that Dr. Brummett has had on my life, the Communication Studies department, Bloomsburg’s campus, and the Xi Omega chapter of Lambda Pi Eta,” he said. “Dr. Brummett’s overwhelming love and care that she brings to her everyday life should not go unnoticed. Even though I may have never experienced any other LPH advisor, I know that the work that Dr. Brummett puts in the Xi Omega chapter goes unmatched. The environment she creates and the growth she catalyzes in LPH members makes her one of the most loved professors on the Bloomsburg campus.”

Dr. Brummett attended the Lambda Pi Eta business meeting at the 109th National Communication Association Annual Convention in National Harbor, Md., on Saturday, Nov. 18, where she received a plaque for Advisor of the Year.

The LPH Xi Omega chapter was also awarded the Chapter of the Year Award by the National Communication Association in 2019 and continues to implement the six goals of Lambda Pi Eta through its annual events for Communication Studies students and the university community on the Bloomsburg campus.
