Titilope Adekola, of Ikenne in Ogun State, Nigeria, is a recipient of Commonwealth University Lock Haven's Shades of LHU Legacy Scholarship for the 2023-24 academic year.

A sophomore accounting major, Adekola boasts a 3.76 GPA. She is also a member of five student organizations on campus - serving in leadership roles with three of them.

Drawn to Lock Haven because of its intimate size and affordability, Adekola said it was the supportive community she found on campus, and the wealth of opportunities afforded to her that brought her back for her sophomore year.

She also credits her scholarship as a catalyst that motivates her to do better, and lessens her financial burden as she pursues a college degree more than 5,000 miles from her native country.

"Receiving this scholarship is significantly helping me this year," Adekola said. "I've been able to take on more academic and co-curricular opportunities this semester, and really feel that I'm excelling in both areas.

"I would like my donors to know that I will always be grateful for the amazing impact they have had on me both academically and professionally," she added.

Along with being a role model in the classroom, Adekola is a leader on campus. She is president of the Sophisticated Ladies organization, treasurer for the Black Student Union, and an officer for the Humanity Club. She is also a member of the Business and Accounting Club and the Multicultural Club and she works on campus as a resident assistant.

"These experiences are enhancing my leadership skills and opening doors to additional opportunities for me," said Adekola. "Lock Haven offers an environment that is very conducive for learning, where all faculty and departments are willing to help, and provide resources that ensure you succeed. Lock Haven really is an amazing university."

The Shades of LHU Legacy Scholarship provides up to $1,000 annually to exemplary black students at CU-Lock Haven. Awardees are selected by a committee of black alumni who fund the scholarship. All recipients must have a GPA of 3.0 of greater.

Upon earning her degree from CU-Lock Haven, Adekola plans to become a certified public accountant and fashion influencer.
